Tour and Visits
Each itinerary can be personalised on request. A professional photographer can accompany you if desired.
Viterbo on foot
A morning guided visit to the historical centre and its monuments. Leaving the premises, the route includes different stages: the Priori Palace, which has been the administrative headquarters of the town since the 15th century; the medieval piazza of Gesù, with the church that was the scene of a terrible crime mentioned even by Dante in his Divine Comedy; piazza San Lorenzo and its cathedral and the Palazzo dei Papi, which was the seat of the Popes for over 20 years in the 13th century and here was where the first and longest conclave in history took place; the medieval quarter of San Pellegrino, the largest in Europe. In the afternoon a visit to a ceramic workshop: in Viterbo, the art of ceramics had its greatest moment of glory between the 13th and 15th centuries. During the visit we want our guests to relive for two hours the thrill of decorating a ceramic artefact of the old tradition with the same ancient techniques. The professional craftsmen of Artistica welcome guests and show them the whole ceramic creation process, describing its colours and symbolism. Each participant is given a plate to decorate under the tutelage of an expert ceramicist.
Villa Lante - Bagnaia
(5 km from Viterbo, 10 minutes by car)
A morning guided visit to the Villa Lante and stroll through the village of Bagnaia. Crowned Italy’s “most beautiful park” in 2011, Villa Lante is a late 16th century masterpiece. Designed by Vignola and residence of cardinal Francesco de Gambara in the 16th century, it was the property of Lante della Rovere until the 20th century. The garden teems with fountains and water features, ancient trees, hedges and floral designs.
(59 km from Viterbo, 55 minutes by car)
A morning guided visit to the archeological site of Vulci, the once flourishing Etruscan centre and important Roman town which still today preserves the ancient road and a monumental domus of the late republican/early imperial age. An important destination on the Grand Tour throughout the ages, it fed the imaginations of artists and writers from all over Europe. The new itinerary also includes recently discovered Etruscan tombs. Amidst an uncontaminated natural landscape, the walk to Vulci is a real journey through time, amongst grazing cattle and horses, ancient ruins, calm and silence. The afternoon can be dedicated to sporting activity on the river Fiora (aquatrek) or on Lake Mezzano (aquatrek and tubing).
Vulci: Aquatrek on the river Fiora
Walk along the Fiora riverbed or let yourself drift along with the current, clad in wetsuit and life jacket, laughing and living the force of nature. This is the new frontier for thrill seeking; getting in close contact with water. The route is suitable for anyone with no particular physical impairment. You spend between 2-3 hours in the water, descending along the course of the river in a spot that is particularly clean and natural. You return via a woodland path. The whole excursion lasts approximately 5 hours. Minimum age: 6.
Vulci: Aquatrek on Lake Mezzano
Site of Community Importance and protected for its extreme natural value, it is the perfect place for an enjoyable “natural swim”, an out-of-the-ordinary guided visit, cool and pleasant in the heat of summer. Supported by an inflatable life vest, transported by the mild water, one can discover all the secrets of nature in a relaxing and fun way. This activity is suitable for anyone with no particular physical impairment. You spend about 2 hours in the water, in the lake. It is not necessary to know how to swim. The whole excursion lasts approximately 3 hours. Children under 6 are allowed to take part after consultation with the guide. Lake Mezzano is near Valentano, approx. 34 km from Vulci, 45 minutes by car; 40 km from Viterbo, 50 minutes by car.
Vulci: Tubing on Lake Mezzano
One literally immerses oneself in the environment of the volcanic lake, which will be seen from a new angle: using large rubber rings like tyre inner tubes. A fun group experience to be enjoyed by people of all ages. This activity is suitable for anyone with no particular physical impairment. You spend about 2 hours in the water, in the lake, and the activity is good for young and old alike with no physical problems. Descending along the course of the river in a spot that is particularly clean and natural. The activity lasts 3 hours in total. Children under 6 are allowed to take part if they share a tube with an adult or stay in the canoe with a guide.
(21 km from Viterbo, 25 minutes by car)
A morning guided visit to the Parco del Mostri (Park of the Monsters). One of the world’s most mysterious places, it has escaped explanation by many great scholars for centuries, and also had a profound effect on Salvador Dali. Created in the second half of the 16th century, it is populated by enormous stone sculptures with monstrous faces, dragons, bears, pagan divinities and a tilting house. The afternoon can be dedicated to an excursion to the Etruscan Pyramid and to the Pasolini/Santa Cecilia waterfalls. The woodland that surrounds Bomarzo hides ancient artefacts: Etruscan altars, Roman cave passages… There are so many places to pause and meditate, from the Etruscan Pyramid to the ruins of the ancient Byzantine church of Santa Cecilia, at the end of the river, lulled by the soothing sound of the waterfalls immortalised by Pier Paolo Pasolini. The route may take in just one of these places (approx. 1 hour there and back) or a combined, longer itinerary can be created in accordance with the desires of our guests.
(22 km from Viterbo, 35 minutes by car)
A morning guided visit to the Palazzo Farnese di Caprarola, a late 16th century masterpiece designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and later finished by Vignola. It was decorated by the Zuccari brothers and other great masters of Italian Mannerism. The panoramic spiral staircase and the awe-inspiring Mappamondo will leave visitors breathless. Between the stucco and frescoes, architectural fantasy and Italian gardens, this is certainly one of the most popular cinematic locations, both international and Italian, in terms of historical films.
Civita di Bagnoregio
(23 km from Viterbo, 30 minutes by car)
A morning guided visit to Civita di Bagnoregio. Known as “the dying city” because it is perched on a tufo and clay spur, which is slowly crumbling away due to centuries of erosion. Today the town is cut off from the surrounding territory and linked to the rest of the world by a long bridge that can only be crossed on foot. Characterised by tiny tufo houses brightened by colourful flowers, it is as if time has stood still and one is walking through the past.
